The origin of Takasaki City University of Economics traces back to Takasaki City Junior College. In 1949 when Japan’s education system was being reformed after the Second World War, higher education facilities in Gunma Prefecture were integrated into the newly established Gunma University.
Although Takasaki City, the most prosperous commercial city in the prefecture, tried to set up a faculty of economics within the university, the additional establishment of a department was not possible due to the tight financial conditions after the war. However, in 1952, Takasaki City independently established Takasaki City Junior College, Department of Commerce and Economics. In 1957, due to various circumstances surrounding the nation’s economic development, the College was closed and instead, the four-year Takasaki City University of Economics,Faculty of Economics was established in the same year.
