"Recently, Japanese society has been aging rapidly, the birthrate has remained low, and poor social conditions have lead to an increase in violent crime, even within the family. On the other hand, all over the world nationwide strife has become an everyday occurrence, and the global environment is being destroyed. At this moment what is essentially required seems to be kokoro, which in Japanese implies a warm regard for others. This is needed especially by people who are engaged in the fields of nursing and social welfare. The Japanese word kokoro means both mind and heart, in other words, intelligence and sensibility, and this duality of meaning corresponds to the intellectual and emotional aspects of humanity"
