The Superior Miguel Torga Institute (ISMT) is a university of Private Higher Education with more than seven decades old. This institute is located in Coimbra and was founded in 1936 on the initiative of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, with the support of Professor Bissaya Barreto, Chairman of the Board of Beira Litoral Province. Currently, Carlos Amaral Dias is the director of the institution which has about 30 employees, 100 Teachers / employees and 1400 students.
In May 1936, for the Lord's invitation Professor Fernando Bissaya Barreto arrived in Coimbra a group of French nuns to work in the nest for the Little Ones and other ancillary works. At that time, the idea was born to create a school that would support in socio-medical knowledge and would provide an educational action and persistent and insightful assistance. At the initiative of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, in 1937 he founded the Social Normal School "Health". The objectives were to answer the need for technicians training in the medical and social framework that would allow a response to the needs that they appear on the maternal and child sector.
