Established in 1972, Tribhuvan University Institute of Medicine (IOM) in Kathmandu is the first institution in the country, which was given the mandate by the Government of Nepal to train and develop all levels of health personnel in the field of medicine. The very first programmes that IOM started were the training of Health Assistants and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife. Over the years, diplomas and later bachelor level courses (programme) in paramedical subjects and nursing were added. The MBBS programme was started in 1978 with only 22 students.
