The origins of the Graduate School of Medicine/Faculty of Medicine, Osaka University can be traced back to Tekijuku, founded in Osaka in 1838 by Ogata Koan. Stepping forward to promote smallpox vaccination in order to control the disease, which was prevalent at the time, Ogata dedicated his life to the introduction of Western medicine in Japan
Even today the Graduate School of Medicine/Faculty of Medicine, Osaka University is the successor to Koan's achievements and his spirit, as it has strived unceasingly to build new fundamentals of medicine, to develop the medicine of the future, and to train graduates who can innovate and thrive on the global stage. As a result, it has graduated numerous outstanding medical practitioners and researchers in medicine and the life sciences, who through their remarkable activities in Japan and around the world have become world leaders in the field of medicine. In these ways, the Graduate School of Medicine/Faculty of Medicine, Osaka University aims to achieve further progress through advancing clinical research in areas such as global research on medical fundamentals, advanced medicine, and translational research on the medicine of the future.
