The history of the Tocantins University Foundation began in February 1990 by Decree 252/90. Law 326/91, of October 1991, structured the University of Tocantins in the form of authority. Law 872/96 of November 1996 determined the process of extinction of the local authority and the same year, by Law 874/96, November 1996, authorized the creation of the Foundation then University of Tocantins - Unitins, as a foundation Public Private Law, held by public and private entities with state government support, with headquarters and jurisdiction in Palmas, the state capital. For better care of the state's population, Unitins has been linked to the implementation of extension centers in the cities of Manta, Guaraí and Tocantinópolis, incorporating the faculties of Araguaína and Porto Nacional and eventually settled in your multicampi system the University Centers of stingrays, Araguaína, Hills, Guaraí, Tocantins Miracema, Paradise Palms, Tocantinópolis and Porto Nacional, standing out as a higher education institution at the regional level. In 2000, Unitins new adaptation process started with the creation of the Federal University of Tocantins - UFT. Again it was legally necessary to change the structure of Unitins - Foundation, and so was dictated Law 1,160 / 2000 of June 21, 2000.
