Before World War II Bydgoszcz was seen primarily as an industrial, commercial and service. It is true that work here musical institutions and associations such as: Bromberger der Musik Conservatory (founded in 1904 by Arnold Schattschneider and Wilhelm Winterfeld), the Municipal Conservatory of Music (founded in 1927 by Zdzislaw Jahnke) Music Society. Paderewski (founded in 1922), and several choral societies, but the range of their artistic impact was primarily local. In 1938 at the initiative of the Music Society established the orchestra with director Alfonso Rosler, but its activity ended World War II.
Immediately after the liberation of Bydgoszcz, in February 1945 reactivated its activities Municipal Conservatory of Music, which was possible thanks to the fact that the city was slightly damaged, preserved musical instruments, and survived the Nazi occupation of the greater part of the teaching staff. In April this year inaugurated the Polish Radio Orchestra in Bydgoszcz, over which Arnold took charge of artistic Rezler (brother Alfonso was killed in the September campaign). Initially, it functioned as a 18-bed ensemble, presenting a repertoire mostly from the circle of salon music, but for more ambitious projects widened the composition and also performed symphonic music. A significant limitation for the development of this orchestra was the repertoire and organizational dependence radio station, so not stopped efforts to establish an autonomous professional symphonic band. These treatments in March 1946, to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Bydgoszcz, resulted in the creation of the Municipal Symphony Orchestra, powered largely by musicians "Radiówki". Conducting the orchestra is also entrusted Arnold Rezlerowi and organizational care covered Musical Society.
